Flying a drone in Romania depends on exact take-off coordinates, planned altitude and flight time. The restrictions map — ROMATSA UAS zones plus active NOTAMs — answers: can I fly here, now, legally?
Why check the map before every flight?
Romanian airspace includes airports, military areas, protected sites and temporary NOTAM restrictions. Check the official map before each flight, not weeks ahead.
Official UAS map: flightplan.romatsa.ro/init/drones
MApN clearance when required: aerofoto.mapn.ro
You can also use the Drone Log UAS map for an integrated pre-flight workflow — complementary to official sources, not a replacement.
Reading ROMATSA colours
On the Drone Log map (like ROMATSA) you see three coloured layers: purple, blue and yellow. Conditional EASA zones appear as purple or blue — there is no separate grey layer.
| Colour | Usual meaning |
|---|---|
| Purple | Restricted zones, prior authorisation, military/special (MApN, R/P/D) |
| Blue | Aerodromes, CTR/TMA — controlled airspace |
| Yellow | Active NOTAM — temporary restriction |
| No coloured layer | Does not automatically mean “clear” — zoom in, check NOTAMs; we do not draw green (permitted) zones |
See our ROMATSA map guide for symbols and CTR perimeters.
NOTAM and Open category rules
Re-check NOTAM on flight day even if the UAS map looked clear at planning. Open category max altitude is generally 120 m AGL unless the zone or NOTAM sets a lower limit.
Practical checklist
- Mark exact take-off point and route on the UAS map.
- List all intersected zones and altitude limits.
- Overlay active NOTAMs for the same time window.
- Check MApN if the zone is military (MApN clearance guide).
- Document the check in your flight log.
FAQ
Where is the official ROMATSA drone map?
At flightplan.romatsa.ro/init/drones.
Can sub-250 g drones ignore restricted zones?
No. UAS zones and NOTAMs apply to all drones.
Does Drone Log replace ROMATSA?
No. It helps you plan and document; official sources remain mandatory.
To move from theory to practice, check if you can fly or use the airspace checker. If the zone requires it, generate the approval request.
