Key information

  • A1 — classes C0 and C1. With C0 (under 250 g) you may fly over uninvolved people, but never over crowds.
  • A2 — class C2, operating at a safe distance from uninvolved people; requires the A2 certificate, obtained by examination at the Romanian CAA.
  • A3 — classes C3 and C4, in areas where uninvolved people are not endangered and at a distance from urban areas.
  • The competency certificate does not remove the airspace check.
  • The exact distances for each subcategory are published by the Romanian CAA and in Regulation (EU) 2019/947 — check them for your operation.

What this means for you

Start from the class marked on the drone: it gives you the subcategory, and the subcategory gives you the certificate you need. Drones without a class marking fall under separate transitional rules — check them with the Romanian CAA.

To move from theory to practice, check if you can fly or use the airspace checker. If the zone requires it, generate the approval request.
