Why you need the UAS map before every drone flight

In Romania, whether you can fly depends on take-off location, route, altitude and time — not only on open-category rules. The official UAS zone layer published for Romania, plus same-day NOTAMs, defines what is allowed. This page offers an interactive Romania-focused map and a practical guide below.

Drone Log does not replace official sources (ROMATSA, NOTAM, AACR, MoD). It helps you structure checks, keep evidence in your flight log and prepare approval requests. The public map is a first step — a free account unlocks date/time checks, exports and HG 859 MoD workflow.

Whether you fly recreationally with a DJI Mini in open category A1/A3 or operate commercially with operational authorisation, the planning flow stays the same: UAS map → NOTAM → ground assessment → logbook. This page targets searches such as “Romania drone map”, “UAS zones”, “drone flight restrictions” and “Romania NOTAM”, with links to detailed guides, blog articles and legal resources. If you are new, read the sections below in order; if you are experienced, use the interactive map and return to the checklist when planning in a new city or near a regional airport.

What are UAS zones

UAS geographical zones are airspace sectors where EU rules impose specific requirements: prohibition, notification, altitude limits or ATC coordination. In Romania they are published cartographically by ROMATSA.

Common types include PROHIBITED, REQ_AUTHORISATION and CONDITIONAL. On the Drone Log map we show only restrictions and active NOTAMs — green (permitted) zones in the EASA classification are not drawn. No coloured layer does not automatically mean no restrictions. Read our ROMATSA map guide for symbols and airport perimeters.

What is NOTAM and why it matters

NOTAM announces temporary or permanent airspace changes: closures, airport works, military exercises, VIP events. A zone may look open on the static UAS map but a same-day NOTAM can prohibit flight.

This map shows NOTAMs with available geometry. Guests see a limited preview on click; a Drone Log account provides full text integrated into planning and the flight log.

How to check restrictions — practical checklist

Locate take-off and route on the UAS map. List every zone crossed. Note type, altitude cap and authorisation requirements. Overlay active NOTAMs. Check military/MoD perimeters separately.

Assess ground risk, competency and equipment. Document everything in your flight log. Drone Log automates map checks — see zone verification guide.

FAQ — Romania drone map

The official source is the ROMATSA UAS map (flightplan.romatsa.ro). This page shows the same type of data on an interactive map: UAS zones, NOTAMs and a point verdict.

It is the UAS geographical zones map published by ROMATSA — the permanent airspace regime for drones, plus temporary NOTAMs.

UAS zones are relatively permanent cartographic restrictions. NOTAMs are temporary changes that can close airspace on flight day.

Guests see ID, validity window and a snippet. Free account unlocks full text and log integration.

This public page focuses on Romania. Signed-in users can access the full multi-country map in the app.

Use the search field above the map — enter a city name and the map centres on it.

All zones, prohibited, authorisation required, conditional, or NOTAM layer only.

No. Outlines are public. Account needed for full details, temporal checks and approvals.

Prepare coordinates, purpose, time, UAS type and competency proof. Drone Log generates request packages.

Yes — responsive layout for field use before take-off.

No. You send emails yourself; the app prepares documents.

It displays official UAS and NOTAM data for visualization. We help you follow the right planning steps — area check, NOTAM, and documentation in one clear workflow.

It is a planning tool. You also need same-day NOTAM, proper category, competency, landowner consent where required and sectorial approvals.

Below 120 m in a CTR and outside restricted zones, the flight needs no authorisation: you send the control tower a notification (Annex 1) at least 24 hours ahead and tell it your take-off and landing times. Above 120 m you request authorisation (Annex 2). In a restricted zone inside a CTR you need approval from the tower and from the institution that requested the zone, at least 48 hours ahead. Exception: in the Bacău CTR every flight needs authorisation. Drone Log shows on the map which case applies.

Annex 1 is the notification form in the ROMATSA procedure for UAS flights in a CTR below 120 m. It holds the operator, drone and flight details (area, altitude, date and time window) and is sent to the tower at least 24 hours ahead. Drone Log fills it in from your check on the map.

When you photograph, film or map in a UAS zone with a MoND (Ministry of National Defence) contact. You apply through the AEROFOTO app at least 7 working days ahead, and the clearance is free. An open-category flight outside these zones needs no clearance, even if you film.

Why use Drone Log?

One place to check airspace and prepare the flight — without rebuilding data manually before every mission.

  • All essential information in one place: UAS map, NOTAM, request documentation and logbook.
  • Fast check on the exact flight point, not just the city name.
  • UAS zones and NOTAMs correlated for the planned date and time.
  • Generate the documentation needed to request approval when the zone requires it.
  • Flight log with export, linked to the checks you made.
  • Time saved before every flight — less hunting across separate sources.
