Key information
- Check the UAS map first — approval requirement appears zone by zone, not for the whole country.
- Controlled zones (CTR) and restricted areas usually require prior coordination with AACR or the control tower.
- Prepare exact coordinates, date, time window, altitude, drone details and purpose before sending.
- Drone Log generates the request draft (HG 859, Annex 1) from map-check data — you send it yourself.
- Do not take off without written confirmation valid for the planned window.
What this means for you
Romanian CAA approval is not a formality — it is a safety coordination step. Plan ahead and get written confirmation before the flight; the concrete deadlines are set by the procedure of the authority or of the air traffic unit for that zone.
Before sending documents, check if you need approval. Then generate the approval request or read about the HG 859 request and flight approval in Romania.
Practical steps for AACR approval
The flow below takes you from “I don’t know if I can fly” to a documented decision, without skipping the zone check.
- Mark the point on the map Do not rely on the city name. Two points in the same neighbourhood can fall in CTR, a restricted zone or a zone with no approval requirement. Use exact coordinates and note the perimeter if you operate over an area.
- Read the zone type and contact On the UAS map you see whether coordination is needed, with whom and at what altitude. Sometimes the contact is the control tower; other times the procedure points to AACR or an administrative channel. Note the email/phone from the details.
- Check the day’s NOTAM Even with an approval in progress, a new NOTAM can block the window. Compare time (including UTC vs local), altitude and area. If the NOTAM affects you, stop the plan until you clarify.
- Prepare and send the request Fill in operator, pilot, drone, location, window, altitude, purpose and safety measures. In Drone Log you can generate the draft from the map check; you send it on the official channel and keep proof.
- Wait for written confirmation Fly only after a clear reply for your window. If more data is requested, answer before the planned date. Re-check the map and NOTAM on the morning of the flight.
