Drone flight rules in Romania

Flight rules combine your UAS category with airspace restrictions. Even with a valid certificate you can be blocked by a zone, a NOTAM or distance to people.

Key information

  • Usual open-category max altitude — 120 m AGL, unless the zone is lower.
  • Keep VLOS unless you have special authorisation.
  • Do not fly over assemblies of people without the right legal framework.
  • Check the UAS map + NOTAM on every flight.
  • Alcohol, unequipped night flight and prohibited zones remain red lines.

What this means for you

Golden rule — if any layer (category, zone, NOTAM, weather, people) is red, do not take off.

Quick pre-take-off checklist

  1. Competence + registration/marking OK.
  2. Point on the map — zone type read.
  3. NOTAM checked for your window.
  4. Approvals/clearances present if required.
  5. Weather, batteries, RTH and abort plan clear.

Frequently asked questions

Only if the drone and operation meet night-flight requirements (lights etc.). Check category and manual.

There is no single national distance — it is defined by CTR/TMA geometry on the map. Read the zone, not a hearsay “5 km” rule.

Depends on subcategory (A1/A2/A3) and assembly type. A3 requires distancing; do not fly over crowds.

No. The zone or NOTAM may lower the ceiling or ban flight entirely.

Operation has age/competence requirements — check AACR for the pilot in command.

In EASA open-category materials + AACR guidance + the ROMATSA map.
