EU Member States publish geographical zones where drone flying is permitted, restricted, or prohibited. EASA explains the colour codes and check steps — you remain responsible for confirming national sources before take-off.

Official EASA guide — geographical zones

The four zone types (EASA)

  • Excluded zone (red) — Red — excluded zone: UAS flying is not permitted as indicated.
  • Restricted zone (yellow) — Yellow — restricted zone: conditions and usually prior authorisation (airports, military areas, parks, etc.).
  • Permitted zone (green) — Green — permitted in the open category if you comply with general EU and national rules.
  • U-space (blue) — Blue — U-space: coordinated operations; additional procedures may apply.

Recommended steps (EASA)

  1. Plan the flight: path, altitude, date and time — in Drone Log steps 1 and 2.
  2. Check the map and national authority; for RO/BG/DK/IS use in-app layers.
  3. If the zone is restricted, obtain authorisation before flying; in Romania you can generate the HG 859 request.
  4. Stay within approved limits (altitude, time, distance).

How Drone Log helps

The map checks UAS zones and NOTAMs for Romania (and other imported sources). See the drone area check guide and the EASA panel on the map. For other countries, use apps listed by EASA for the competent authority.

Some drones have built-in geofencing — keep geographical data updated per the manufacturer and national rules.

Official text and national app listings are on the EASA website; the flight decision is yours.
